  • Notes
    • I know that this line does not follow what the family had for years.  I spent some time on that beautiful family through Kirkby Overblow before I discovered this one.  I found joy in finding Mary Norton's chr and parents where she was left out of extraction, and I worked a great deal on connecting the Norton family to the ones in Whitkirk.  I enjoyed tracing the Cariss and Dale families. But I feel that there is no need to go clear to Kirkby Overblow from Aldborough (twenty miles) when there is a William Wray that just lived down the road.  I think the William Wray in Kirkby Overblow married in Spofforth. I have no family documentation to link William Wray to Kirkby Overblow.
The problem seems to have come from the fact we did not have access to the registers of Ripon here. I was able to purchase a copy of the six microfiche through my contact, Roz Norris of the Ripon Historical Society! There are four William Wrays there that could be ours.  I chose the one from Skelton, which is closest to Aldborough, but they follow up the road from there, one in Bridge Hewick and two in Sharow, which is very near to Ripon itself.  There are Wrays on the other side of Ripon to the west, but there is some distance to cover there, and those Wrays were wealthy.   The one in Bridge Hewick stays there and has a family.  One of the two in Sharow probably are represented by at least one that has children in Ripon. Our William does not stay in Skelton, but people from there often turned from the distance of Ripon and went to Kirby Hill or Aldborough to church anyway.  This William is the closest, and the most likely.
Please note that the microfice registers of Ripon follow strict alphabetical order, and with the difference of the spelling of Rai, Ray, and Wray, sometimes it is difficult to get the families together.  It is sometimes hard to find a spouse's name for the same reason.  I can't follow the register straight back and see what happened in a certain time period, but I hope I have been able to get the families all together correctly.
This man's death is according to family records.  As of this time, I have not been able to find anything on him in America.  He appears to have only lived a few short months after he arrived.  I am looking for a ship's record also.
Included here is a note about the church of Ripon from Roz Norris, my contact in in the local historical society in England.

"The parish of Ripon is a very ancient one.  St. Wilfred built the monastery and the first minister church in Ripon in the 9th century.  After the Dissolution of the monasteries, Ripon Minster continued to be the parish church and the central focus of a large area; this originally included a number of townships and villages which in the 19th century guadually became separate parish churches, such as Pateley Bridge, Skelton, Sawley, Sharow, etc.  It was originally known as Ripon Collegiate Church, and only acquired the status of Cathedral in 1836.  As there are now two Church of England parish churches and a number of non-conformist churches in Ripon itself, as well as the later 'breakaway' parishes, it is well to specify either Ripon Cathedral or Ripon Collegiate church to be sure you are getting the correct records."

The following is another excerpt of importance from Roz Norris.
"Skelton lies about 3 miles south-east of Ripon, on the eastern side of the River Ure.  (Sharow, Copt Hewick, Bridge Hewick and Marton-le-Moor also lie nearby on the eastern side of the river). It is known as Skelton-cum-Newby, after Newby Hall, the local statley home.  From Skelton it is only a short step to Langthorp, Kirby Hill, Boroughbridge and Aldborough, and from thence one can travel on to Dunsforth, Great and Little Ouseburn, or to York (which was of course the original Roman route).
It is interesting to note, and important to know in the research that people from Skelton sometimes skipped the distance to Ripon if the river was low, and they went to Kirby Hill or Aldborough to church.

At the time of his children's births, his dwelling place was given as Ellanthorpe.
