James Phelps, born about 1520, supposedly at Nether Tyne, Staffordshire, is said to be the brother of Francis Phyllyppe, both probably sons of Richard Phyllyppe of that place— referred to in 1588, after his death, as late of Tewksbury. James Phelps married Joan, born about 1542, around the year 1559. They resided in Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, where James died about 1588. Joan was given permission to administer his estate, May 10, 1588, by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. They had nine children and their oldest son William is my [thought Oliver Seymour Phelps'] ancestor. Their sixth child, Edward is the ancestor of William Phelps of Vevery, Switzerland (1877).
William was baptized in Tewksbury on August 4, 1560, and married Dorothy (born about 1563) around the year 1586. William and Dorothy had eight children before William died about 1611. Dorothy and William's brother, Nicholas, administered his estate when he died. When Dorothy died prior to May 31, 1613, Nicholas was commissioned to administer William's estate during the minority of William Jr. (PhelpsFamilyHistory.com)
On pages 70 and 71. We find the family of James Phelps in the Tewkesbury Abbey Church records. The Phelps family have lived in the Tewkesbury area for centuries, but the first records found in the Abbey are for James Phelps who was born about 1520. He is supposed to have been a brother of Francis Phylppe of Nether Tyne, Staffordshire, England. He married Joan __?__. Says the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, administrations 1587-1591, page 60. "May 10th, 1588, commission issued to Joan Phelps, relict of James Phelps, late of Tewkesbury, deceased, to administer the goods and chattels of said deceased." Their children baptized in the Tewkesbury Abbey Church: I. William, bapt. 4th Aug., 1560, m. Dorothy. II. Thomas, bapt. 10th Aug., 1563. III. George, (of Giles) bapt. 5th Sept., 1566. IV. Alice, bapt. 24th Dec., 1572, m. John Hope, June 21, 1595. V. Edward, bapt. 10th May, 1578, ancest. of Rev. Wm. Phelps Prior. VI. Keneline, bapt. 16th Oct., 1580 (prob. Kenelm.) VII. Richard, bapt. 16th Oct., 1583. VIII. Robert, bapt. 18th July, 1584.
Research done in the book "Phelps Family of America" suggests some of the descendants of James' son William Phelps of Tewkesbury, born 1560, settled further south and west in the area in Somersetshire; this is the Puritan branch. Isaac Phelps and Abraham Phelps being the last of their line that remained in Somerset, not far from Crewkerne. The correspondence between the author and Abraham Phelps makes the statement "Some branch of the family left Plymouth many years ago, for some part of America." Another of his grandsons, Thomas, son of William, was given lands in Ireland about the same time that William Phelps and George Phelps emigrated to America; this is the Quaker branch.
