Thomas Steepleford Woodland

Thomas Steepleford Woodland was born 23 Oct 1825 at Albion, Edwards county, Illinois, the son of John and Celia Steepleford Woodland.  Albion is about twenty-five miles northewst of the Kentucky State lineand is between the big and little Wabash Rivers.  The John Woodland family lived here about eighteen years.

Thomas was a young boy when in the western part of New York a young man by the name of Joseph Smith created quite a stir, having been visited by a heavenly messenger.  He had received some very remarkable records.  A new book had been published, the Book of Mormon, and a new church organized known as the Church of Jesus Christ.  The followers were called Mormons.  The Woodland family embraced this faith and moved in 1837 into Missouri where they remained until they were driven out by mobs.  As recounted in the John Woodland family history, many miraculous stories and also many hardships were described as a result of their acceptance of this new church.

They then moved in 1838 to Adam-Ondi-Ahman (Daviess County, Missouri).  While there, because of exposure. Grandmother Steepleford died in Nov. 1838 [Mary or Polly Sanders Steepleford d. 27 Oct 1838 Gallatin, Daviess, Missouri].  In addition, Thomas' brother and sister, Elizabeth and Noah, who had the measles, died and were buried the previous January 4, 1838.

The family then started for Far West (Caldwell Co., Missouri) but didn't reach Far West bescause they were cut off by the mbos, so in 1839 they went down on the bottoms until Far West surrendered.

In 1840, from there they went to Columbus, Adams County, Illinois where they lived four years. In 1841, Thomas and his future wife, Margaret Whitaker, were baptized 1 February by Jefferson Hunt, a friend of the Woodland family. In 1843, they moved to Nauvoo, Hancock county, Illinois, but were driven out from there to Council Bluffs, Pottawattakoel Iowa and the Big Mosquitte in 1847.
Margaret Helena Whitaker was born 23 July 1831 at Fairview, Buncombe, North Carolina.  She was the daughter of James and Melinda Fishel Whitaker.

James Whitaker and family began their trek west 17 May 1834 and made the first stopover at Gallatin, Daviess, Missouri, where Margaret's mother died 13 Jan 1836.  Margaret was five years old at the time.  James married a second wife, Nancy Woodland, Thomas' aunt 16 Jan 1838.

This family lived in Missouri after they were married for a short time.  In 1841 we find they had moved to Columbus, Adams county, Illinois.  Tradiition said that Margaret's father was a bodyguard for the Prophet Joseph Smith.  After the Prophet was killed, the Whitaker family was driven from that area by mobs to Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa, where they stayed for three years.

Thomas and Margaret were married 8 February 1849, at Kanesville, Pottawattamie Iowa.

A son, Thomas Jefferson, was born 19 May 1850 in Kanesville.  Whith a few months they began their trek to Salt Lake City. Thomas and Margaret crossed hte plains with both sets of parents in 1850 in the 6th company or Captain Joseph Young's Company (J.H. 31 Dec 1850).  According to the Phillip G. Wheeler Woodland family history, they left 15 June iin the company of 42 wagons, arriving 1 Oct 1850.

Their mode of travel was a cow and horse hitched to a wagon.  They had one baby, Thomas, and were quite comfortable with the milk she gave after traveling all day pulling a wagon.

Thomas and Margaret lived in Salt Lake City for awhile, and then in the spring of 1853, moved to Willard Box Elder, Utah, where they built a beautiful spacious rock house.  In this house the raised their children:
Celia Malinda 27 Oct 1853
Martha Marena 17 Dec 1855
Margaret Maena 17 Dec 1855
(These twins married brothers, Melvin Lowry and Daniel Webster Gruwell, in 1873.  Melvin was eight years older than Daniel)

Joseph Teancum 8 Feb 1858
Sarah Josephine 24 Aug 1860
John Fishel 17 Nov 1863
Henry Solomon 10 Oct 1868
Edmund abt 1870 (died in infancy)
Polly Anne abt 1872 (died in infancy)

At first they were very poor, but being frugal they always had the necessities of life and many comforts.  Through fiath and hard work they were finally well-to-do.  The rock house still stands to this day in Willard.

On 17 Jun 1856, Thomas and Margaret were endowed and sealed in th Endowment House.  On 22 Mar 1862, Thomas married Sarah Wray Walker, also in the Endowment House.  Sarah had previously been married to Margaret's brother and had four children.  The children born to Thomas and Sarah were:

Sarah Elizabeth 23 Jul 1863
Ida Melissa 10 Dec 1864
Isaac Steepleford 17 Nov 1866
Barbara Jane 28 oct 1868
Daniel Wray 23 Aug 1872

Thomas was very big-hearted.  If any orphan or anyone needed a place to stay, Thomas would take them in, and they could stay at his place.  He died 14 Dec 1904 at the age of 79 at Willard, Box Elder County, Utah and is buried at Willard.  Margaret died14 or 15 Feb 1907 at the age of 75 at Willard and was also buried there.  Sarah lived till age 95 and died 5 Oct 1930.

                                                          THOMAS STEEPLEFORD WOODLAND
                                                                                ---------------
Harman Pearson walked form Salt Lake City to North Willow Creek, a distance of about fifty miles, and staked out a one0fourth section of land.  The United States governemnet gave land to anyone who would stake it out and improve on it.  Mr. Pearson walked back to the Salt Lake City and offered a friend half of the land if he would go with him and take a team of buckskin oxen which he friend owned.

His friend had arrived in Utah in 1851.  His name was Thomas Steepleford Woodland.  He was born in Illinois and along with his parents, brothers, sisters, and other saints, and been driven from their homes, when they stopped in Council Bluffs, he married Margaret Whitaker.  Their first son, Thomas Jefferson, was born there.  They crossed the plains and spent that winter in Salt Lake City.

Thomas decided to go to North Willlow Creek, which name was later changed to Willard.  Mr. Woodland and Mr. Pearson worked together, built homesk, planted grian and gardens, and improved the land.  Three daughters came to bless the Woodland home before 1857.

In the spring of 1857 rumors of war came to the saints.  The United States government was sending an army to the Territory to fight against the "Mormons".  The people did not know what was best to do and decided to do as best they could and let their Heavenly Father guide them.  They went about their work as usual.  The planted their grain and crops, gardens, and improved and repaired their homes.  When the order came from their leader, Brigham Young, to move South they obediently moved their families and what household goods they could take with them to Southeren Utah.

It took all summer to settle the differences betwwen the saints, but when the threat of war was over, Thomas S. Woodland, took his family back to their homes in Willard.  To their amazement their grain and gardnes had not been molested.  They harvested the grian and vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, which meant theat they would have food to last htem through the long cold winter and even enough for things such as a ltitle molasses or thread which they might need.

They were very thankful to their Heavenly Father for keeping the food supply safe.

Thomas Steepleford Woodland died in Willard, Box Elder, Utah the 14 December 1905.
